The story of H&S Bakery reads like a classic American success
story. It is the tale of immigrants from Greece, The Paterakis and
Tsakalos families, who came to this country seeking the American
dream. The Bakery's founders, Harry
Tsakalos and Isidore (Steve) Paterakis,
(H&S) began selling hearth baked
breads out of the basement of a row house in 1943. Steve baked the
Italian bread by hand, while Harry delivered them in their sole
bakery truck. Upon Isidore's passing in 1953, H&S continued
to grow through the dedicated efforts of his son John, Harry, and
later, their childern.
Back then, the founders had simple principles: work hard, pay attention
to detail, focus on product excellence and provide superior customer
service. Through the years, family pride has maintained these standards
of excellence, and today 58 years later, H&S has grown into
the largest specialty hearth baker on the East Coast with over 100
hearth-baked varieties of breads, rolls and speciality items. Sill
family owned and operated by second and third generations family
members, the company's affiliates include 15 state-of-the-art baking
facilities operating in 11 states with distribution in 23 states.
The same old-fashion principles that helped H&S grow from a
small, row house bakery into a nationwide success, still guide the
H&S family today.
